Before you import
your product CSV.
A few careful checks can save a lot of catalog cleanup.
1. Keep your original export
Save an untouched copy before editing. Select “New products” for a new catalog, or “Update existing products” when checking an export you intend to reimport.
2. Keep product groups together
A product’s variants and additional images can share its handle. Do not remove these rows just because the handle repeats. When splitting files, keep the full product group in the same file.
3. Separate formatting from business decisions
Trimming a header is a formatting fix. Changing a SKU, price, tax setting, or variant option can change your business data. Review those issues in the source file.
4. Check what an offline tool cannot
Confirm image URLs are public, fulfillment services exist in your store, and any metafields have the correct definitions. This tool does not connect to your Shopify account or fetch image URLs.
5. Import a small sample first
Review Shopify’s import preview, especially its option to overwrite matching handles. Empty cells and omitted columns can have different effects on existing products.
